Greenock Juniors 0 - 0 Oakley Utd
(Greenock win 3-2 on pens)
Scottish Cup 3rd rnd replay
John Stark stands up to the penalty.
This replay went ahead on a very heavy Ravenscraig pitch after days of rain. Both teams were very evenly matched and due to the conditions it was very hard for either side to play any free flowing football. The first half was a scrappy affair with most of the football being played coming from the visitors without troubling Stark in the Greenock goal. Ritchie on the left wing for Oakley looked the most likely to create an opener but had to settle for a succession of free kicks. Chances for Greenock in the first half were few and far between but John Paul Dow almost created a chance out of nothing for himself when his pressure caused a mix up between the Oakley keeper and defender but he was unable to get his effort on target. Stark was called into action at the other end when his handling had to be spot on from a free kick drilled in from the left wing was headed for his bottom right hand corner and shortly after he had to be alert to tip an effort over from Oakley's Ross Morrison. Greenock's best chance of the half came with ten minutes of the half remaining when he failed to divert a cross from left home when it seemed easier to score.
Half-time 0 - 0
Greenock came out in the second half and pinned back there opponents and looked the more determined of the sides. An early chance came for Greenock to open the scoring but Alan Barnes header was just out of reach of the outstretched McIntyre and went out for a bye kick. Greenock although having the majority of possession were not creating any clear cut chances and Roy Ness in the Oakley goal was not being tested. Graham Black was coming more into the game and a great cross from the right wing gave the Oakley defence problems as it dropped between them and their keeper and with McIntyre breathing down there neck forced it to be played behind. With 20 minutes remaining Oakley were reduced to 10 men. A high ball into there box saw Monaghan go in a challenge the keeper. The keeper took exception to this and swung an arm at him. The referee did not see the incident but after a conversation with the stand side linesman returned to the keeper and produced his red card. For the remainder of the match Greenock pressed the visitors but no chances were created. The best chances of the half came in the dying minutes when first Oakley could have snatched. Substitute Johnston work space for himself on the right hand side and his cross into the box was almost knocked home but Gault managed to slide in to deflect the ball to safety. With almost the final kick of the ball Gordon Lappin had the chance to put Greenock into the last 32. Gault swung his cross in from the right and the clearance feel to Lappin on the volley, but his effort sailed over the cross bar and the match went to the dreaded penalty shoot out.
